Why can't I buy mavacamten at an ordinary pharmacy?
Because the only licensed mavacamten is Camzyos, a human medicine with controlled dispensing, and no version is authorised for animals anywhere.
The FDA approved Camzyos capsules in 2022 for adults with symptomatic NYHA class II–III obstructive HCM. It came with echocardiogram monitoring and a restricted supply route:
"Camzyos is only available through a restricted program called the Camzyos Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS)." — US Food and Drug Administration, 2022 (FDA)
That programme is built around adult human patients. In the EU, Camzyos has been authorised for people since 26 June 2023. The capsules come in adult strengths; in the main human trial, patients started on 5 mg. A cat weighs a few kilograms and needs a tablet made for that scale. Any "camzyos price" you find online is for the human product.
Why do search results for "buy mavacamten" show research chemicals?
Because the pages that rank are laboratory suppliers selling the pure compound for experiments, and when we checked on 30 Oct 2026 no veterinary retailer appeared in the top results.
Their own pages say the compound is for research use only and not for human consumption or therapeutic use. Take that label at face value. A research powder comes in milligram vials for lab work, with no tablet form and no dosing guidance for animals. Weighing out a fraction of a milligram at a kitchen table is not realistic, and a vet cannot adjust a dose nobody can measure. The other result that ranks is a 2021 owner Q&A, written when mavacamten was not available for cats at all.

Which cats are candidates for mavacamten, and which are not?
The cats it might suit have obstructive HCM confirmed by echocardiogram and preserved systolic function, and their own vet or cardiologist has to agree.
In obstructive HCM, the thickened heart muscle and the mitral valve narrow the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) while the heart squeezes. The mitral valve can be pulled into the outflow path, which cardiologists call systolic anterior motion (SAM). Mavacamten reduces how hard the heart muscle contracts. In the one feline study, that removed SAM and the pressure gradient across the outflow tract.
That same action explains who should not be a candidate:
- Cats with non-obstructive HCM. There is no obstruction for the drug to relieve. The differences are explained in obstructive vs non-obstructive HCM in cats.
- Cats with reduced systolic function. A drug that lowers contraction can lower it too far. In a study of 282 cats with HCM, low LV systolic function was an independent predictor of shorter cardiac survival.
- Cats without an echo. A murmur alone does not tell you whether HCM is present or obstructive. Only an echocardiogram does.
For cats in heart failure or with a history of clots, there are no mavacamten data at all.
How strong is the evidence for mavacamten in cats?
It is thin: one acute intravenous study in 5 research cats, plus a large trial in people.
Stern and colleagues (2016) studied 5 research-colony cats with naturally occurring obstructive HCM. The drug was given by IV infusion under anaesthesia, obstruction was provoked with an adrenergic agonist, and the team measured the effect on echo during the same session. Mavacamten reduced contractility and relieved the outflow obstruction, in step with the amount of drug in the blood.
"Our findings provide proof of principle that acute reduction in contractility with MYK-461 is sufficient to relieve LVOT obstruction." — Stern et al., PLoS One, 2016 (PubMed)
Proof of principle is the right term. There was no oral dosing, no follow-up beyond the session, and no client-owned cats. MyoKardia, which developed the drug, co-authored the paper. A PubMed search on 30 Oct 2026 for mavacamten in cats returned only this study and one review.
The stronger data come from people. EXPLORER-HCM randomised 251 adults with obstructive HCM for 30 weeks. After exercise, the outflow gradient fell 36 mm Hg more on mavacamten than on placebo.
"45 (37%) of 123 patients on mavacamten versus 22 (17%) of 128 on placebo met the primary endpoint" — Olivotto et al., Lancet, 2020 (PubMed)
Safety and tolerability were similar to placebo in that trial, which MyoKardia funded. A human result cannot be assumed to carry over to cats, and a 2023 review notes that no current feline HCM therapy has shown a long-term survival benefit. Nobody can tell you mavacamten will make a cat live longer.
How is mavacamten different from rapamycin (sirolimus)?
They aim at different problems: mavacamten at the obstruction in obstructive HCM, rapamycin at the wall thickening in subclinical, non-obstructive HCM.
Rapamycin, also called sirolimus (human brand Rapamune), is given once a week. The RAPACAT trial followed 43 client-owned cats with subclinical, non-obstructive HCM for 180 days. On the low dose of 0.3 mg/kg, maximum wall thickness changed by −0.17 mm, against +0.94 mm on placebo. The higher dose did not differ significantly from placebo. Felycin-CA1, a delayed-release sirolimus tablet, is conditionally approved in the US only, for subclinical HCM. Its EU application was withdrawn in 2025.
A cat with a thickened but unobstructed heart and no symptoms is closer to the rapamycin evidence. A cat with a measurable outflow gradient is the one mavacamten was studied in.
We sell rapamycin for cats with HCM from €44 for a month at the 0.4 mg strength. Our guide on where to buy rapamycin for cats covers prices and strengths.
How is the dose of mavacamten for cats decided?
Your cat's own veterinarian or cardiologist sets the dose and adjusts it against repeat echocardiograms; there is no published oral dose for pet cats.
The feline study used IV infusions in anaesthetised research cats, so there is no tablet dose to copy, and we give no mg/kg figure. In people, Camzyos is used with echo monitoring because the drug lowers contraction and the dose has to be matched to the response. The same logic applies to a cat: the vet looks at the outflow gradient and systolic function, then decides whether to keep, lower or stop the dose.
What should I ask my vet before ordering?
Bring these questions to the appointment:
- Is my cat's HCM obstructive on echo, and how large is the outflow gradient?
- Is systolic function normal enough to lower contraction safely?
- What starting dose would you use with 1 mg tablets, and how often?
- When should the first recheck echo be, and what result would make you stop?
- Should my cat stay on any current medicines, and do any of them interact?
- Would rapamycin, or no new drug at all, be a better fit for my cat's stage?

Frequently asked questions
Is mavacamten approved for cats?
No. No veterinary authority has approved mavacamten for animals. Camzyos is approved for adult humans in the US and the EU, and use in cats is investigational.
How much does mavacamten for cats cost?
At Rapavie, one box of 1 mg tablets costs €342, plus €30 tracked shipping per order. You pay by card in your local currency. Camzyos prices you see online refer to the human product.
Can I give my cat human Camzyos capsules?
The capsules come in adult human strengths, and there is no published method for dividing them for cats. Ask your vet before giving any human medicine to a cat.
Is mavacamten a new drug for HCM in cats?
It is a new type of drug, a cardiac myosin inhibitor, but in cats it has only been tested once, acutely, in 5 research cats. Treat it as an investigational option your cardiologist may consider for obstructive HCM.
Do I need a prescription to buy mavacamten for my cat?
Mavacamten is a prescription medicine. Your own veterinarian or cardiologist should confirm the diagnosis, set the dose and be involved before the first tablet.
Can mavacamten and rapamycin be given together?
No published study has tested them together in cats. They target different forms of HCM, so most cats will fit one evidence base better than the other. Your cardiologist decides.
